A calligrapher's table by a London window with a gold Ali name necklace

Our story

Some things you carry wherever you go.

A language. The smell of mint tea. The names of the people you love. This is the story of a family who learned to carry home in gold.

بيت

London, 2019

Home became something we carried.

In 2019, Khadija and her son Ali began a new life in London. A new city, a new language, new grey skies.

What Syria left in us was not a place on a map. It was smaller, and closer: the Arabic spoken at the kitchen table, a glass of mint tea on a rainy afternoon, the way someone who loves you says your name.

We learned that home is not only where you live. It is what you refuse to forget.

الاسم أول بيت

A name is the first home you ever have.

What we believe

Hands writing Arabic calligraphy with a qalam reed pen

II

القلم

The house of the pen

Why we are called Manzil al-Qalam

Manzil means house. Qalam is the reed pen of Arabic calligraphy: cut by hand, dipped in ink, guided slowly across the paper, one breath at a time.

For centuries the qalam has written what people wanted to keep. Prayers, poems, letters home, names. We named our house after it because that is what we want to do too: take a word that matters and give it a shape that lasts.

عائلة

A mother and her son

Made by a family, for families.

Manzil al-Qalam is run by Khadija and her son Ali, from our home in London. Two generations, one table, and the same question every day: how do we make something worthy of a name?

We started it for people like us. People who live between two languages. People who want their children to know where they come from. People who want to wear a name, their own, their mother's, their daughter's, the way it was meant to be written.

نور

Gold that remembers

Every piece begins with a name.

You give us a name. We write it in Arabic calligraphy and check the spelling by hand before anything is made, because a name written wrong is not a gift.

Then it becomes one connected piece, in 18k gold plating or silver. Not loose letters. One shape, like a signature, to wear close to your heart.

Noor means light. That is what we hope every piece carries.

What we promise

اسمك

Your name, spelled right

Every name is written and checked by hand before it is made.

قطعة واحدة

One solid piece

Letters that touch and hold together, made to be worn every day, not kept in a box.

هدية

Made to be given

Made to order for the person who will wear it, and ready to gift.

Whose name will you carry?

Your mother's. Your daughter's. Your own. Thank you for letting our family be a small part of yours.

With love, Khadija & Ali
